Function / Content

This series consists of a register to record details of data plans, compiled maps, exploration maps, railway plans, field books and level books. An index is included at the back of the register. The register is divided into the following sections; data plans (pp.1-11), compiled plans (pp.16-28), Darwin compilations (pp.29-30), explorations (pp.32-33), road traverses (p.34), railway plans (pp. 36-38), field books (pp.40-47), level books (pp.47-53, 58-59), and road traverse field books (pp. 54-56). Most of the sections, except road traverses and road traverse field books, were copied from the register available in NTRS 2438. Of these the following three sections have date ranges recorded; explorations (1864-1915), field books (1864-1919), level books (1914-1954), and road traverse field books (1928-1930). The data plans, compiled plans, Darwin compilations, and road traverses sections record entries in six columns titled; plan no, locality, classification, surveyor, FB [field book], and description of survey. Explorations includes six columns titled; plan, locality, classification, explorer, date, and description of survey. Railway plans were recorded in eight columns including; plan, scale, classification, locality (from and to), from MP [miles], to MP [miles], and remarks. The field books section has six columns titled; FB no. [Field Book number], classification [old or recent], plans, surveyor, date, and description of survey. The level books and road traverse field books section contain five columns titled; book no [number], plan no [number], surveyor, date, and description of survey.
